James Martin

Saxophonist and singer James Martin has a funky, soulful sound that combines New Orleans traditions with contemporary jazz. It's a sound that evokes the classic vibe of New Orleans artists like Allen Toussaint and Dr. John, but with a modern edge informed by his time as an original member of Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews group. Since 2008, Martin has led his own band and issued albums like 2012's Blue, 2017's Something's Gotta Give, and 2019's Top Ten Billboard jazz-charting Keep Movin'. A native of New Orleans, Martin initially started out playing guitar as a child before switching to the tenor saxophone. In his senior year of high school, he took classes at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. It was there that he befriended fellow up-and-coming players Trombone Shorty and Jon Batiste. Soon, he was playing regularly as a member of Andrews' Orleans Avenue ensemble. After high school, he balanced his time touring and recording with Andrews and attending Loyola University on full scholarship where he double-majored in jazz saxophone and music industry studies. He eventually parted ways with Andrews to focus on his solo career, issuing his 2012 debut album Blue and his 2017 follow-up Something's Gotta Give. Along with his own work, Martin has performed with a bevy of performers, including Ivan Neville, Flowtribe, Amanda Shaw, James Andrews, Ernie Vincent, and as a member of the Soul Brass Band. In 2019, he released his third solo album, Keep Movin', which debuted at number nine on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart.
