iamnotshane

Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Shane Niemi makes wry, melancholic pop under the moniker iamnotshane. His songs are often accompanied by self-directed music videos showcasing his offbeat dance moves. Several EPs and singles, including 2016's Sad, preceded the release of his debut album, 2021's One Less Year Alive. He then issued his most heavily streamed song to date, "Maybe My Soulmate Died," in 2022. Niemi started writing songs when he was 12. He began his career with the piano-driven single and video "Sinister" in 2014. His debut EP, Sad, appeared in 2016 and featured "Insecure," his first track to stream in the millions. He moved in a more dance-oriented direction with singles like "Afterlife" and "Security," and released the EP iamnotshane on Avant Garden/Island Records in 2020. Niemi returned to releasing music independently at the end of the year, and iamnotshane's debut album, One Less Year Alive, arrived in 2021. He issued "Maybe My Soulmate Died" in 2022, around the same time he toured the U.S. and Europe as a headlining act. The track became his most successful song yet, and he followed it with others like "What Doesn't Kill You Mutates and Tries Again" and 2023's "I've Been Nothing But Funny and Sexy to You," in advance of his second album.
