Horatio Luna

Rising to prominence in the mid-2010s as a founding member of the Australian soul and hip-hop collective 30/70, Melbourne-based record producer and bass guitarist Henry Hicks has since forged his own path under the stage name Horatio Luna. Distilling influences from a vast array of musical subcultures including rap, house and contemporary jazz, his hybrid club concoctions blur the lines between various styles, making for genre-straddling results. Launching his solo career in 2018 with the four-track Cultural Warriors EP, released via local label La Sape and featuring a collaboration with local singer Milan Ring, Luna furthered his international reach the following year after BBC broadcaster and Brownswood Recordings founder Gilles Peterson personally invited him to contribute a track to his Sunny Side Up compilation and documentary, spotlighting the artists at the forefront of Melbourne’s modern soul scene. Splitting off from 30/70 in 2019, Hicks has remained a member of traditional jazz band John Henderson and dance act Lush Life, and has closely collaborated with afro-house group Teymori. In 2020, he released three projects under the Luna moniker: a debut album, Yes Doctor, which saw him return to La Sape; a collaborative improv EP with fellow multi-instrumentalist Foshe entitled Nice to Meetcha; and an EP on jitwam’s Jazz Diaries label entitled Boom Boom, which earned support from the likes of Spotify and Mr Scruff.
