Hiroko Moriguchi

Born Hiromi Hanamura on June 13, 1968 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, the tarento and singer known professionally as Hiroko Moriguchi took her first musical steps as a teenage backing singer in the Tokyo Music Academy performing arts group School Mates (スクールメイツ, Sukūrumeitsu). After cutting her teeth at variety shows and quiz programs, she took on the stage name Hiroko Moriguchi in homage to musician Masaaki Hirao and female golfer Yuko Moriguchi. Signed to King Records, her debut solo single arrived in 1985, "Mizu no Hoshi e Ai wo Komete" (水の星へ愛をこめて, which was featured on anime TV series Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. The single went to Number 16 in Japan and was met with a raft of new singles over the next few years. None of these hit the same highs as her debut single, until 1991's "Eternal Wind ~Hohoemi wa Hikaru Kaze no Naka~" – released for anime film Mobile Suit Gundam F91 – went to Number 9 in Japan and gave her one of her biggest reigning hits. Also recording a cache of songs for the Fuji TV variety show Yume ga Mori Mori (夢がMORI MORI, "Dream Is Mori Mori"), she spent the 1990s scoring TV appearances and continuing to release albums, with 1997's Happy Happy Blue among her notable full-lengths. She took a break from releasing studio albums during the '00s and '10s, butt carried on putting out singles as well as forming a trio with Yoko Minamino and Tomomi Nishimura called Blooming Girls in 2012. To mark the 40th anniversary of the Gundam franchise in 2019, she released the Gundam Song Covers album, which went to Number 3 in Japan; her first Top 10 album since 1991's Eternal Songs. A second Gundam Song Covers album arrived in 2020 and the following year, she celebrated 35 years of musicianship with her first studio album since 1997's Happy Happy Blue, Aoi Inochi. A third Gundam Song Covers album arrived in 2022.
