Havohej

This profane black metal outfit was formed in June 1993, and was led by self-confessed New York Satanist, drum-teacher and graphic artist, Paul Ledney: ‘In the days when Venom first appeared there was something very personal about what was going on. You could relate to the music. Now there are just too many trendies jumping on a bandwagon and imitating what they perceive as being the atmosphere of the genre. They all put on make-up and sing about Satan. They believe that alone makes them evil’. Equally influenced by the early punk bands, Ledney put together Havohej as a studio project following the dissolution of his earlier band, Profanatica, when tapes of their first full album together were mysteriously destroyed in the studio (probably a good thing, given its working title - The Raping Of The Virgin Mary). They had previously recorded a split album with Columbian band Massacre for the Osmose label, and a three-track single, ‘Unholy Darkness And Impurity’. Like Profanatica, Havohej benefited from the underground tape scene, particularly as many of the songs on the band’s debut album were reconstructions of material from Ledney’s former outfit. However, by the middle of 1994 Havohej, too, were no more.
