Grayhorse Singers

The Gray Horse Singers were one of the first Native American drum groups in the United States. Formed in 1979 to perform at the Navajo nation Fair in Winter Rock, Oklahoma, The Gray Horse Singers continue to bring their musical celebration of the Earth to audiences around the globe. In addition to performing at pow wows throughout the United States and Canada, the group has toured Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Italy and the United Kingdom. According to Jack Anguoe, Sr. (pronounced: Ann -Q), the founder of the Gray Horse Singers and a member of of the Kiowa tribe, "where the drum sits is holy ground. It is our duty to move the spirit (of the drum) to the people". Anguoe, who danced as a youngster, began singing in 1945 at the age of twelve. One of his earliest performances came when an uncle arranged for him to sing at Buckingham Palace in London, England. In 1959, Anguoe sang at a pow wow in Gray Horse, Oklahoma. The Gray Horse Singers were the first drum group for the United States to compete in Canadian drum contests. In 1979, the group placed first in every contest they entered at the pow wow in Pigeon Lake, Alberta. In addition to performing with the Gray Horse Singers, Anguoe has lectured on Native American music and culture at universities and colleges throughout the world.
