Christopher Palameta
Oboist Christopher Palameta is one of the few players of his instrument to specialize in historical oboes. He has a large recording catalog, made with a variety of European early music ensembles, and has also recorded several solo albums.
Palameta was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1979. He earned a graduate degree in historical oboes from McGill University in Montreal, studying with Washington McClain, Bruce Haynes, and Theodore Baskin. He is fluent in both French and English and has translated booklet notes for several albums. After completing his studies, Palameta became a core member of Toronto's Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra from 2003 to 2007. He is also a researcher into the largely undocumented early history of the oboe who earned multiple research grants from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. His debut album, Concerti Virtuosi, came as part of Tafelmusik in 2007. He is the director of the wind chamber ensemble Notturna and has recorded several albums with that group; his first album as a featured artist was Johann Gottlieb Janitsch: Sonate da camera, Volume I, which won a Best CD of the Year award from the Conseil québécois de la musique. Notturna went on to record several more albums of Janitsch's music.
Palameta moved to Paris in the late 2000s decade and since then has performed with a large number of top early music ensembles in various countries. These have included Pygmalion in France, Die Kölner Akademie in Germany, La Petite Bande in Belgium, and Il Pomo d'Oro in Italy. Farther afield, he has worked with the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra and MusicAeterna in Perm, Russia. He has recorded with various groups and has also issued several solo albums, generally championing neglected music for the oboe. These include Marais: Suites for Oboe, released in 2015 on the Audax label, and Berlioz's Lost Oboe, which appeared on Ramée in 2023. That year, Palameta also appeared on Notturna's album Calcutta 1789: À la croisée de l'Europe et de l'Inde.
