1986 Omega Tribe

Not to be confused with the British anarcho-punk band of the same name, Omega Tribe is a J-pop and city pop band who existed between 1983 and 1994. However, the group’s roots reach back to 1978 when guitarist Shinji Takashima – who remained in most iterations of Omega Tribe until 1991 - and his musician friends formed Cutie Panchos in 1978. After a trio of singles and the album Live!1982, the group began working with producer Koicho Fujita, who encouraged them to record material from outside riders. Changing their name to Kiyotaka Sugiyama & Omega Tribe, the group debuted in 1983 with the album Aqua City, which landed at Number 4 on the Japanese Albums chart. The group released two Number 1 albums – Another Summer (1985) and First Finale (1985). When vocalist Sugiyama left the group at the end of 1985, Fujita brought in new vocalist Carlos Toshiki to take his place. Changing the group’s name Omega Tribe, the group’s next album was 1986’s Navigator, which rose to Number 2 on the chart. After the release of their Number 1 album Crystal Night (1987), the group changed their name to Carlos Toshiki & Omega Tribe. The first album under the new band name was 1988’s Down Town Mystery, which reached Number 3. Subsequent albums didn’t fare as well on the charts although the group was still massively successful. Their final studio album together, Natsuko, was released in 1990. The group split up in 1991, and the band’s name laid dormant until producer Koichi Fujita resurrected a new line-up for Brand New Omega Tribe in 1993. Their 1994 album Beach Hippies did not chart, and the Omega Tribe project was finally laid to rest. Beginning in the early 1990s. several side projects related to Omega Tribe – including Weather Side, W Omega, Santa Kaniyoshi, Jyuro x Omega, Kumi’s Band, and B-Edge – began to make waves in the music business bus although none of them proved to be commercially successful. Each version of Omega Tribe has had several compilations released over the years including Never Ending Summer Remix, which revisited Kiyotaka Sigiyama & Omega Tribe’s 1984 album.
