Il aura suffi d’une boîte, lourde, démoniaque, noire et d’une élégance rare pour renvoyer aux oubliettes n’importe quelle compilation ou autre box soit-disant collector censée couvrir la plus grande période de Black Sabbath (et Dieu seul sait si elles sont légion). Faut-il préciser que la période en question n’est autre que celle des débuts, quand, entre 1970 et 1978, le groupe sort pas moins de huit albums, enregistrés avec Ozzy Osbourne. De sublimes brûlots à la lourdeur et à la puissance incomparables, qui font de la musique du combo de Birmingham la véritable pierre angulaire du heavy metal, et par extension du doom, du sludge et du stoner, courants sous influence marqués au fer blanc ces messes noires supersoniques gravées sur vinyle. De vinyle, il en est question puisque The Ten Year War est à la base un coffret qui célèbre ce support comme aucun autre ne l’avait fait auparavant avec le répertoire du groupe. De quoi apprécier la musique en grand, avec six premiers albums mythiques, et deux autres plus anecdotiques et expérimentaux réalisés alors que le groupe lutte contre les excès de substances en tout genre et n’arrive plus à vraiment trouver de ligne directrice ni à gérer les tensions internes. En parallèle à ces rééditions vinyles, le groupe propose dans le coffret l’intégralité de son contenu au format numérique haute définition. Un son unique que vous pouvez désormais déguster en ligne, comme si vous étiez installés derrière la console de mix. Il aura suffi d’une boîte, lourde, démoniaque, noire et d’une élégance rare pour renvoyer aux oubliettes n’importe quelle compilation ou autre box soit-disant collector censée couvrir la plus grande période de Black Sabbath (et Dieu seul sait si elles sont légion). Faut-il préciser que la période en question n’est autre que celle des débuts, quand, entre 1970 et 1978, le groupe sort pas moins de huit albums, enregistrés avec Ozzy Osbourne. De sublimes brûlots à la lourdeur et à la puissance incomparables, qui font de la musique du combo de Birmingham la véritable pierre angulaire du heavy metal, et par extension du doom, du sludge et du stoner, courants sous influence marqués au fer blanc ces messes noires supersoniques gravées sur vinyle. De vinyle, il en est question puisque The Ten Year War est à la base un coffret qui célèbre ce support comme aucun autre ne l’avait fait auparavant avec le répertoire du groupe. De quoi apprécier la musique en grand, avec six premiers albums mythiques, et deux autres plus anecdotiques et expérimentaux réalisés alors que le groupe lutte contre les excès de substances en tout genre et n’arrive plus à vraiment trouver de ligne directrice ni à gérer les tensions internes. En parallèle à ces rééditions vinyles, le groupe propose dans le coffret l’intégralité de son contenu au format numérique haute définition. Un son unique que vous pouvez désormais déguster en ligne, comme si vous étiez installés derrière la console de mix. Asseyez-vous et laissez les maîtres de la réalité vous entraîner jusqu’aux tréfonds d’une musique saturée et hypnotique qui a tant fait pour le salut du rock’n’roll dans ce qu’il a de plus extrême. © Chief Brody/Qobuz
