Once regularly performed by the likes of Janet Baker and Peter Pears, the songs of William Busch have been mostly forgotten. Julia Busch, William's daughter who was a newborn when he died, has been attempting to shed light upon his works once more. After meeting at a song festival, Julia and mezzo-soprano Diana Moore struck up a relationship, and Moore began to program William's works in her concerts. In 2021, Julia and Moore, along with the other performers here (baritone Roderick Williams, tenor Robin Tritschler, and pianist John Reid), launched the crowdsourcing project Circles Within Circles: The Songs of William Busch. The result of this successful campaign is this album containing the whole of William Busch's works for voice and piano. Though not fully presented in chronological order, the composer's maturity is evident as the program traverses, especially in the harmonies between the singer and piano and in the increasingly complex passages for the piano, masterfully handled by Reid. An interesting aspect of this album is that each of the singers selected a composer who was a friend of Busch's to augment the program, with Moore choosing Elizabeth Poston, Williams selecting Gerald Finzi, and Tritschler picking Michael Head. The singers will likely be the main draw for this album, each sympathetically accompanied by Reid, who has worked with Moore for more since the early 2000s. Of particular note is the song cycle There Have Been Happy Days, Busch's final work, which gives wartime poems by Wilfred Gibson settings; the passion of the text and its subject, along with the music provided by Busch, will likely find sympathetic audiences. This endeavor should expose these works to new listeners, particularly those interested in 20th century English song.
