Ce n'est que rétrospectivement que l'importance d'un album comme Slave to the Grind de Skid Row apparait pleinement. A sa sortie en 1991, il n'est finalement que l'album de heavy metal à succès du moment. La machine à remonter le temps a permis de voir quelques décennies plus tard qu'il avait surtout été un précurseur pour tout le heavy metal de la période suivante.
Si à ses débuts Skid Row pouvait passer pour le petit frère gentiment turbulent de Bon Jovi, Slave to the Grind montre que les gaillards ont parfaitement capté l'esprit du grunge naissant (Nevermind de Nirvana date également de 1991). Un tel disque est forcément l'expression d'une force commune parvenue à son zénith, Dave "The Snake" Sabo, Rachel Bolan et Sebastian Bach n'ayant jamais été aussi complémentaires malgré l'animosité latente entre les deux derniers nommés.
Le morceau titre est à lui seul la parfaite incarnation de la modernité de l'ensemble du disque. Son « sale » et rythmique inspirée par le thrash font de « Slave to the Grind » le parent direct d'une palanquée de morceaux de heavy metal composés depuis. Il ne faut pas chercher ici de jolis chansons comme « 18 & Life », Slave to the Grind se révélant plutôt du genre bagarreur version guet-apens de rue.
Des titres comme « Quicksand Jesus » ou « Creepshow » illustrent bien ce penchant à asséner du bourre-pif en cadence. Même le trompeur « In a Darkened Room » s'avère finalement plus malsain qu'autre chose. Slave to the Grind est certainement l'album qui marque le plus nettement la transition entre le son des années 1980 et celui de la décennie suivante. Une façon de se faire sa place dans l'histoire avec un certain panache.
