Mathieu Romano
Conductor Mathieu Romano is best known as the director of the Ensemble Aedes choir. He has also led other choral and orchestral groups as well as operatic productions.
Romano was born on May 28, 1984, in Auxerre in the Burgundy region of central France. He attended the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMDP), studying conducting with Zsolt Nagy. While still in his student years in 2005, he founded Ensemble Aedes, naming it after bardic storytellers in Greek mythology. Romano was also the beneficiary of advice from conductors with a range of backgrounds, including Pierre Boulez, François-Xavier Roth, and Susanna Mälkki. Romano served as assistant conductor under Roth, Dennis Russell Davies, Marc Minkowski, and others. In 2013, he appeared on the Aeon label with Ensemble Aedes on the recording Philippe Hersant: Clairvaux - Instants limites.
Romano has also conducted other choirs, including the Nederlands Kamerkoor, the RIAS Kammerchor in Germany, and the Latvian Radio Choir. He has been active as a symphonic conductor with the Sinfonia Varsovia in Warsaw, the Orchestre Régional de Normandie, and an outreach group of the Orchestre de Chambre de Nouvelle-Aquitaine. He has also led operatic productions with the Paris group Les Frivolités Parisiennes. With Ensemble Aedes, Romano has appeared at such venues as the Philharmonie de Paris, the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and the Dijon Auditorium, as well as at leading festivals, including those in Aix-en-Provence, Nantes (La Folle Journée), and Besançon (the Franche-Comté Music Festival). In 2020, Romano received the title of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from France's Ministry of Culture. In 2022, he was appointed artistic director of the new Pôle Régional d'Art Vocal of the Hauts-de-France region and also became musical director of the Lille Opera Chorus. Romano has led Ensemble Aedes on albums for the Evidence, Naxos, and Aparte labels, issuing a recording of Stravinsky's Les noces and a choral version of Ravel's Bolero on Aparte in 2023.
