Après neuf mois de répétition, les Byrds enregistrent leur premier album portant le nom de leur plus grand succès, n°1 aux Etats-Unis comme en Europe. Composé de plusieurs reprises de Bob Dylan notamment « All I Really Want to Do », qui ne sera d’ailleurs pas reconnue par son auteur initial, il contient d’exceptionnelles compositions de Gene Clark comme « I Knew I’d Want You ». En combinant des textes magnifiques à des mélodies pop, les Byrds créent une alchimie parfaite, et font faire ici une grande avancée au rock en créant tout simplement le folk rock.

Remarquablement uniforme, leur musique sera désormais immédiatement reconnaissable par ces harmonies vocales riches associées au son magnifique, pur et cristallin de la Rickenbacker de Roger Mc Guinn : « ça tintait presque comme des cloches d’église… ». Sa façon d’en jouer est ici novatrice en ce qu’il l’utilise à la manière d’un banjo, d’où cette pluie de notes métalliques que l’on entend dès l’introduction mondialement connue de « Mr.Tambourine Man », si emblématique de la fin des sixties de la cote ouest qu’il est souvent associé au « California Dreamin’ » des Mamas and the papas ou encore au « San Francisco » de Scott McKenzie.

On retrouve d’ailleurs ici la touche des « beautiful people » : harmonies vocales sur fond de tambourin, mélodies gaies mais légèrement mélancoliques, comme dans « I Knew I’d Want You », chanson d’amour pop où les voix aériennes baignent dans un spleen véritable. Les autres compositions de Clark ne sont pas moins intéressantes : « I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better » est un excellent exemple de fusion entre folk américain et pop anglaise, « It’s No Use » est une autre réussite de cet album.
