« Carlo Maria Giulini flamboie, l'orchestre sachant scintiller le giocoso, ombrer le dramma, courir vers l'abîme avec une sorte de vertige emporté, suspendre le mouvement pour soutenir l'interrogation : il est partenaire de l'action, dans le détail comme dans le geste ouvert d'un bout à l'autre, dans l'arche de l'œuvre parcourue. Et la distribution est sensationnelle, accordant à chaque personnage sa caractérisation la plus subtile, de l'Elvire calcinée d'Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, poussée au bout d'elle-même, corps et âme emportés, à l'Anna virtuose de Joan Sutherland coulée dans une fureur presque limpide, en passant par le Don Giovanni d'Eberhard Waechter, qui, avec la tranquille évidence de l'Ange dans le fameux film de Pasolini, Théorème, vient bouleverser l'Ordre sans éclat superflu, mais avec un chic admirable. « Totem lyrique, version studio de référence, le Don Giovanni de Mozart enregistré en 1959 par Carlo Maria Giulini pour EMI est un plébiscite, qui valut au chef d'orchestre la rare consécration d'un Disque d'or reçu en 1992 et qui dépasse aujourd'hui les 150 000 exemplaires vendus en France (plus de 1,5 millions dans le monde). D'autres Don Giovanni ont vécu, bu, mangé et aimé, mais celui qui fut réalisé dans les studios londoniens d'Abbey Road reste insurpassable par la qualité d'une distribution somptueuse et équilibrée (Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, qui fut la grande Elvira de son temps) et par la direction incandescente et raffinée de Giulini à la tête du Philharmonia Orchestra. Aux côtés des versions de Fritz Busch (1936), Bruno Walter (1942), Wilhelm Furtwängler (1954), Josef Krips (1955), Dimitri Mitropoulos (1956) et, plus près de nous, Bernard Haitink (1984), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (1989) ou Roger Norrington (2003), la verve de Giulini, sa vitalité, sa noblesse, son sens inné du théâtre et sa frondeuse élégance font de cette version un must inégalé. » (Le Monde, 25 mars 2004, "Don Giovanni, un classique inégalé")


« On ne discute pas une réalisation Legge aussi mythique que celle-ci : on l'écoute en osant à peine émettre quelques menues réserves. Giulini est au meilleur de son art, non encore statufié, pondéré mais alerte, ferme, nerveux, précis. Et puis un Italien, enfin, attentif à la pertinence du récitatif comme à la transparence orchestrale. Il faut que la magie musicale de cette direction soit enivrante pour nous faire accepter un plateau plutôt inégal. Wächter, en macho mal dégrossi, Taddei capable du meilleur comme de la charge, Alva moins mauvais qu'ailleurs, Cappuccilli maladroit et Frick exotique : il en fallait moins pour tout gâcher. Leurs conquêtes heureusement nous aguichent. Schwarzkopf encore et toujours, en Elvira, irrésistible, Sutherland seule à rendre justice à la coloratura de "Non mi dir", Scutti adorable. D'autres Don Giovanni ont vécu, bu, mangé et aimé, mais celui qui fut réalisé dans les studios londoniens d'Abbey Road reste insurpassable par la qualité d'une distribution somptueuse et équilibrée (Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, qui fut la grande Elvira de son temps) et par la direction incandescente et raffinée de Giulini à la tête du Philharmonia Orchestra. Aux côtés des versions de Fritz Busch (1936), Bruno Walter (1942), Wilhelm Furtwängler (1954), Josef Krips (1955), Dimitri Mitropoulos (1956) et, plus près de nous, Bernard Haitink (1984), Nikolaus Harnoncourt (1989) ou Roger Norrington (2003), la verve de Giulini, sa vitalité, sa noblesse, son sens inné du théâtre et sa frondeuse élégance font de cette version un must inégalé. » (Le Monde, 25 mars 2004, "Don Giovanni, un classique inégalé")


« On ne discute pas une réalisation Legge aussi mythique que celle-ci : on l'écoute en osant à peine émettre quelques menues réserves. Giulini est au meilleur de son art, non encore statufié, pondéré mais alerte, ferme, nerveux, précis. Et puis un Italien, enfin, attentif à la pertinence du récitatif comme à la transparence orchestrale. Il faut que la magie musicale de cette direction soit enivrante pour nous faire accepter un plateau plutôt inégal. Wächter, en macho mal dégrossi, Taddei capable du meilleur comme de la charge, Alva moins mauvais qu'ailleurs, Cappuccilli maladroit et Frick exotique : il en fallait moins pour tout gâcher. Leurs conquêtes heureusement nous aguichent. Schwarzkopf encore et toujours, en Elvira, irrésistible, Sutherland seule à rendre justice à la coloratura de "Non mi dir", Scutti adorable. Guido Cantelli, l’aristocrate de la baguette

La réédition massive et parfaitement restaurée des enregistrements de studio de Guido Cantelli, au début des années 1950 pour EMI et RCA, viennent raviver le souvenir d’un chef d’orchestre dont le lumineux témoignage commençait singulièrement à s’émousser. « Chef d’orchestre des temps nouveaux », Guido Cantelli était un aristocrate de la baguette, toujours à la recherche du beau son à travers un strict respect des partitions qu’il dirigeait avec ferveur.
