Mon Fils ma bataille, La vie ne m’apprend rien, Je ne suis pas un héros, Le Chanteur… Telle la potion du mage Eusæbius dans Les Visiteurs de Jean-Marie Poiré, la simple évocation de ces tubes nous propulse au beau milieu de la France des années 1980. C’est la décennie du premier septennat de François Mitterrand, marqué par les réformes économiques et sociales des débuts, puis par la désillusion. Célèbre pour son face-à-face houleux avec le futur président de la République un an avant son élection, Daniel Balavoine a souvent voulu donner une dimension sociopolitique à ses chansons. On se souvient de L’Aziza (contre la montée en puissance du Front national) ou de Sauver l’amour (sur le tiers-monde), toutes deux sorties en 1985. Naturellement, cette anthologie regroupant 100 titres indispensables de Balavoine égrène ces albums et 45 tours ayant fait la gloire de ce chanteur révélé par Starmania en 1978 et réputé pour sa texture vocale hors norme. Mais pour beaucoup, elle sera également l’occasion de découvrir ses premiers pas dans la musique à la fin des années 1970, une période étonnamment plus rock. Ses deux premiers albums notamment (De vous à elle en passant par moi et Les Aventures de Simon et Gunther…) sont marqués par une écriture musicale particulièrement exigeante. Mort à 33 ans en 1986, Balavoine nous lègue une œuvre plus éclectique qu’il n’y paraît, marquée par un style généreux qui s’inspire de la musique pop-rock anglophone de l’époque (il fut l’un des premiers artistes français à posséder un home studio et à utiliser abondamment des synthétiseurs), tout en étant l’un des plus beaux fleurons de la grande variété hexagonale. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz.
