Comme Gershwin, Bernstein a tâté de tous les genres musicaux et les a, lui aussi, tous influencés ! Au point que sa musique soit devenue une sorte de BO de l’Amérique, de Broadway à la pop en passant par le jazz. Le jazz justement. En pleine année du centenaire Bernstein, le label Decca propose de compiler l’amour des plus grands musiciens et chanteurs, d’hier et d’aujourd’hui, pour l’art de l’auteur de West Side Story. L’intérêt de ce Jazz Loves Bernstein est surtout de réunir des classiques et des pièces moins connues. De Billie Holiday dans Big Stuff (extrait de Fancy Free) à Diana Krall et Mark Whitfield pour Some Other Time (de la comédie musicale On the Town), le spectre est assez large. On trouve ici des pépites comme le Tonight de West Side Story interprété avec beaucoup de chaleur par Billy Eckstine, ou, extrait de la même œuvre, Maria et I Feel Pretty magnifiés par Sarah Vaughan. D’autres pointures comme Oliver Nelson, Oscar Peterson en trio, Bobby Scott, Eric Reed, Mel Tormé, Carmen McRae, Bill Charlap, Maynard Ferguson et Bob James revisitent à leur manière des chansons et des thèmes entrés dans le patrimoine pour se les approprier.
