Partant du postulat qu'il est rigoureusement impossible de rater une compilation de James Brown, compte tenu d'un répertoire hors norme regorgeant de pépites, celle qui appuie le propos du film de Tate Taylor, Get on Up , produit par l'admirateur de longue date, Sir Mick Jagger himself, ne déroge pas à la règle en présentant le « Soul Brother Number One » dans ses incunables en studio et lors de prestations inoubliables.
À l'instar d'un long-métrage syncopé par les retours à l'enfance (pauvre est un euphémisme), dans lequel s'illustre malicieusement Chadwick Boseman, la bande originale s'autorise un ballet entre les époques, les styles et enregistrements studio ou live du maître de la scansion funk et de la transe gospel.
Du studio où sont sortis les classiques « Sex Machine (Parts 1 & 2) », « The Payback », « Out of Sight » et « I Got You (I Feel Good) », le florilège passe la vitesse supérieure en intégrant des extraits publics renversants comme le lascif « Please Please Please » saisi dix ans plus tard à Tampa (Floride), la fameuse version de « Night Train » captée à l'Apollo de Harlem, New York, en 1962 et une brochette impeccable alignant « I Got the Feelin' » / « I Can't Stand Myself (When You Touch Me) » (Auditorium de Dallas, 1968), « Sex Machine » / « Super Bad » (Olympia de Paris, 1971) et « Soul Power » / « Try Me » (retours à l'Apollo de 1971 et 1967 - respectivement). En cadeau, la version moins courante de « Caldonia » illustrant la rencontre avec Little Richard.
Ce qui fait l'originalité de l'album est agrémenté d'autres perles sans secret pour les amateurs mais capitales pour tout néophyte : « Papa's Got a Brand New Bag » ou l'invention du funk donnant lieu à une scène de répétition mémorable, « Cold Sweat », « Mother Popcorn », « Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud » et « Get Up Offa That Thing », cheval de bataille de tous les concerts jusqu'au dernier. Dans sa version française, Get on Up: The James Brown Story y ajoute trois reprises d'intérêt variable : la relecture fidèle de « Please Please Please » (troisième passage) par Ben l'Oncle Soul ; la version détonnante de « I Got You (I Feel Good) » par Skip the Use et J Top's Orchetra ; et « It's a Man's Man's Man's World » par la débutante Yseult. Avec James Brown, c'est très simple : tout est dans le titre.
