The music of composer Dobrinka Tabakovaa lives in British crossover realms with fascinating hints of her Eastern European origins and of Baltic holy minimalism. She writes both a cappella choral music and works involving an organ or a full orchestra. This sacred-secular release is structured nicely, proceeding from a cappella pieces to music with the BBC Concert Orchestra, of which she was named composer-in-residence in 2015 when the Truro Cathedral Choir first developed a corps of 20 girl choristers. Those choristers are on display here, along with other local young singers, and given the diverse vocal source material, the results are impressive in orchestral music that evokes the Cornwall landscape. These orchestral pieces were recorded live at Truro Cathedral; sample Kynance Cove for this effect. They are likely to gain considerable popularity, but they are perhaps less distinctive than the opening a cappella works, which are sparser and have a unique flavor that combines British warmth with various more economical Eastern European sounds. There is also a pair of attractive solo organ works performed by Truro Cathedral organist Joseph Wicks. A fine release from an English cathedral choir that's more crossover-oriented than others, worth hearing even if that's not where your tastes lie.
