Ce disque de Charlie Parker est sans doute celui qui fit le plus polémique en son temps. Considéré par certains puristes comme une tentative commerciale trop prononcée pour un artiste de génie, ce « With Strings » fut, de fait, son plus gros succès populaire. Dans sa biographie, Charlie Parker révèle qu'il tenait beaucoup à cet enregistrement avec cordes. Il pensait sérieusement, et l'histoire lui donnera raison, que sa musique devait être prise au sérieux comme celle des musiciens classiques. Et il ne trouvait pas meilleur écrin qu'une section de cordes pour mettre en relief ses improvisations toujours aussi libres. Il demeure un album attachant ou sa musique, en contrepoint d'un tapis de cordes sans intérêt et très daté, reste d'un niveau unique. Charlie Parker connut, avec cet orchestre, quelques soirées heureuses dans sa vie tourmentée.
