Pauvre Salieri… peu avant sa mort, des rumeurs vinrent alimenter la fable selon laquelle il aurait empoisonné Mozart, puis la rumeur devint une pièce de théâtre de Pouchkine, un opéra de Rimski-Korsakov avant de terminer sous forme de film. Alors que Salieri, aîné de son illustre contemporain, ne ménagea jamais sa peine pour l’aider et le soutenir, de son vivant comme après 1791. De sorte que Salieri tomba rapidement dans l’opprobre et sa musique dans l’oubli, pendant des décennies. Ce n’est qu’assez récemment que l’on s’est penché sur son riche répertoire, et que voici ? Un chef-d’œuvre dont le livret est signé Da Ponte (tiens, tiens), écrit en 1778 pour Venise et remanié en 1783 pour Vienne, et dont le titre La scuola de' gelosi rappelle furieusement le titre alternatif de Cosi (de 1790, rappelons-le) qui est La scuola degli amanti, un évident pont de Da Ponte entre les deux sujets. Pour cet enregistrement, Werner Ehrhardt et son ensemble L’Arte del mondo ont puisé dans les deux versions, offrant à la fois ce qui avait été supprimé dans celle de 1778 et ce qui avait été ajouté dans celle de 1783 : une sorte de version totale, en quelque sorte. L’auditeur ne pourra que laisser éclater sa surprise en découvrant, dans cette École des jaloux, bien des tournures et des facéties que Mozart réutilisa sans se gêner dans ses propres opéras Da Ponte, preuve qu’il tenait Salieri en très, très haute estime. Il est vraiment grand temps de réhabiliter cet infortuné compositeur, du haut de sa quarantaine d’opéras, sa demi-douzaine de symphonies et de concertos, et ses centaines d’œuvres sacrées. © SM/Qobuz
