Nicholas Carter

Nicholas Carter found success as an opera and symphonic conductor well beyond his native Australia. In 2021, he became the chief conductor and co-opera director of Oper Bern, which has brought with it appearances leading the Berner Symphonieorchester. Carter was born in Melbourne. He began his musical life with the violin, later adding piano. While attending Melbourne University, he studied voice and piano. Among his early mentors was the esteemed conductor Richard Gill. In Sydney in 2010, Carter founded a period orchestra with a focus on the music of the 19th century, which brought him to the attention of Vladimir Ashkenazy, who first brought Carter on as assistant conductor with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra; Ashkenazy later appointed him as associate conductor. From 2010 to 2013, he was the associate conductor of the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming at the invitation of Donald Runnicles, and from 2011 until 2014, Carter served as kapellmeister under Simone Young at the Hamburg State Opera. In 2014, he became Runnicles kapellmeister and musical assistant at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Though based in Berlin during these years, Carter retained ties with orchestras and opera companies in Australia. After two seasons as associate guest conductor, he was named the principal conductor of South Australia's Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in 2016. He remained in that post until 2019. That year, he made his recording debut, leading the Adelaide Symphony with soprano saxophonist Amy Dickson on her album In Circles. From 2018 to 2021, Carter was the chief director of the Stadttheater Klagenfurt and the Kärntner Sinfonieorchester. He was heard on two more recordings in 2020, one conducting the Adelaide Symphony and accompanying Jayson Gillham's reading of Beethoven's piano concertos, and the other on Raphaela Grome's album Romantic Cello Concertos, on which he led the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. In 2021, he made his U.K. debut at the Glyndebourne Opera, leading a production of Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail. That year, Carter took up the post of chief conductor and co-opera director at the Oper Bern, and he made his Metropolitan Opera debut conducting Brett Dean's Hamlet. A major component of his early tenure at Bern was a new presentation of Wagner's Ring Cycle, which he also led at the Deutsche Oper Berlin during the 2023-2024 season.
