Masato Suzuki
Conductor, keyboardist, and composer Masato Suzuki has succeeded his father as conductor of the Bach Collegium Japan. He has pursued a varied career that also includes appearances with modern-instrument Japanese orchestras, performances as an organist and harpsichordist in both Japan and his native Netherlands, and a notable career as a composer.
Suzuki was born in 1981 in The Hague while his father was studying early music in the Netherlands. He attended the Tokyo National University for Fine Arts and Music, earning bachelor's and master's degrees there. He also studied composition privately in Japan, but his training as a keyboardist (he studied organ, harpsichord, piano, song accompaniment, and chamber playing, and has been active in all these fields) encompassed both Japanese and Western elements. Among his teachers were his father (on organ), Bob van Asperen (on harpsichord), and Roger Vignoles (vocal accompaniment). Suzuki is the founder of Ensemble Genesis, which has included both Japanese and Western performers and performs programs ranging from the Baroque to the contemporary era. He also founded the Lied Forum, which has pioneered cross-cultural song recitals including narration and paintings in an attempt to bring immediacy to the text. As a harpsichordist, Suzuki has performed Bach harpsichord concertos at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, and he has been organist with Belgium's Ensemble Vox Luminis since 2009, performing on the group's Gramophone Award-winning recording of Schütz's Musikalische Exequien in 2012, as well serving as organist at Tokyo Oncho Church and the Japanese Reformed Church in the Netherlands. He has conducted a wide variety of Japanese orchestras, serving as principal conductor of the Yokohama Sinfonietta from 2013 to 2015, and also leading the Hiroshima Symphony and Tokyo Symphony, among others.
Suzuki's keyboards were heard on many of the recordings on the Bach Collegium Japan's cycle of Bach cantata recordings, conducted by Masaaki Suzuki, and the son succeeded the father as conductor of the group in 2018. Masato Suzuki's recording catalog includes an appearance on harpsichord, with gambist Antoine Tamestit, on a recording of Bach's sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord, on the Harmonia Mundi label in 2019.
