Conductor Neeme Järvi was well into his ninth decade when this set of Delibes ballet suites was released in 2020, but there is absolutely no evidence of any loss of precision. In fact, one of Järvi's strengths is to elicit unusually strong performances from the regional orchestras he has led, including those in Detroit and The Hague, and here, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The work of the winds in Delibes' delicately wrought writing is superb throughout. Beyond that, Järvi has a marvelously light touch in this music, of which he has been a prominent contemporary champion. The "Valse Lent" from Sylvia is irresistibly tuneful here. Sylvia and Coppélia are standard repertory works, but La Source is not, and what's interesting is that in Järvi's hands, another waltz, the "Mouvement de valse" from that suite, emerges as equally entrancing, its great rhythmic subtlety played to the hilt. The plot of Coppélia is involved, but its individual numbers here (the suites are extracted by Järvi himself) come vividly to life. Sample the "Musique des automates," where wind-up mechanical dolls are brought to life. Chandos' sound from the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow is excellent, and it's hard to escape the conclusion that Järvi's recordings of French ballet are a treasure that listeners will be enjoying for years to come.
