Text in englischer Sprache verfügbar
The music world is suffering from no lack of strong young countertenors, and there should be no worries about the continuation of the art as Scholl and the other greats age. Consider Barnaby Smith, whose voice is marked by its versatility across this recital of music by Handel, who requires it. He's probably at his strongest in the athletic arias (try "Venti, turbini, prestate," from Rinaldo, HWV 7), where he has the muscle to sculpt each note cleanly. But there are many other attractions. He's creamy in the pastoral numbers, and in slow pieces he has a distinctive way of lowering the vibrato to zero and holding a knife-blade tone until just before it becomes unpleasant. (In other pieces his vibrato is light and graceful.) Smith also is teamed with Baroque violinist Bojan Čičić and his Illyria Consort, also rising fast; the group's instrumental work is bright and precise and sparkling, and it gets to show off in several instrumental numbers, including the overture to Guilio Cesare in Egitto, HWV 17. A state-of-the-art countertenor recital.
