Gwendoline

Taking the basic tenets of "cold wave" -- a European subgenre of electronic music that further expanded on the minimalist arrangements and detached lyrical style of pioneers like Kraftwerk -- and updating them for a new generation is the calling card of Gwendoline, the underground duo from Rennes, France. After turning heads with their debut album, Après c'est gobelet! (2022), the pair found a unique way to earn exposure for their music: a fittingly satirical short film that played festivals around the world.Pierre Barrett and Mickaël Olivette formed Gwendoline to air their disillusion with the decay and excesses of the modern world, delivered sardonically in their native tongue. Après c'est gobelet! spun off tunes with textures that galvanized the European electronic scene like "Chevalier Ricard" and "Chèques Vacances," furthering their detached, doomer aesthetic. Their album also attracted commercial director Joaquim Bayle, who conceived a short film about them. Gwendoline, named after the band, was a stark black-and-white 16 mm film shot along the French countryside, a sort of sardonic, anti-A Hard Day's Night in which the duo seek out attention for their music with increasing desperation. The short played the Slamdance Film Festival in 2023, earning an honorable mention among jury-selected features of similar length. Gwendoline returned in 2024 with another batch of detached tracks in second album C'est à moi ça, including standouts "Héros national" and "Clubs."
