Town Mountain
An acoustic string band with honky tonk leanings and rock & roll energy, Town Mountain rose out of Asheville, North Carolina, in the latter half of the 2000s, delivering tightly crafted independent albums like 2007's Original Bluegrass and Roots Country and 2008's Heroes & Heretics. Over the next decade, their reputation reached well beyond Appalachia, netting them a Band of the Year award from the International Bluegrass Music Association and an ever-widening audience. An aggressive touring schedule and well-received albums like 2016's Top Ten-charting Southern Crescent eventually helped the group earn a contract with Americana specialists New West Records, which released their seventh album, 2022's Lines in the Levee.
Town Mountain first came together in 2005 under the partnership of founding members Robert Greer (vocals, guitar) and Jesse Langlais (banjo), who have remained the two constants during the band's career. Rooted in bluegrass tradition, but with influences that include the Band, Grateful Dead, and Bruce Springsteen, they issued two albums, 2007's Original Bluegrass and Roots Country and 2008's Heroes & Heretics in quick succession.
Teaming up with South Carolina bluegrass label Pinecastle, Town Mountain recorded another pair of back-to-back albums in 2011's Steady Operator and 2012's Leave the Bottle. Their energetic live shows continued to net new fans, and they were able to translate their core sound in both sweaty rock clubs and traditional music festivals. A 2013 International Bluegrass Music Award helped further bolster their profile, and after a self-released 2014 concert album, Live at the Isis, they hit number four on Billboard's Bluegrass chart with their fifth studio album, Southern Crescent, released by LoHi Records. By this point, Town Mountain's lineup had solidified around the quintet of Greer, Langlais, mandolinist Phil Barker, fiddler Bobby Britt, and bassist Zach Smith. Going independent once more, the band issued 2018's acclaimed New Freedom Blues on their own and were rewarded with another Top Ten chart placement.
Evolving their sound with the addition of drummer Miles Miller, Town Mountain leaned harder into their honky tonk and rock elements on 2022's Lines in the Levee, their first for the New West label.
