Soul Circus Cowboys

A band steeped in the sound and attitude of Southern rock, the Soul Circus Cowboys mix the big guitars and swagger of rock with the melodies and storytelling style of contemporary country. Under the leadership of lead singer and songwriter Billy McKnight, the group's no-nonsense attack and hard-partying attitude earned them a loyal following in their native Florida, while 2012's Lay It Down and 2016's Tailgate Country documented their sound in loud-and-proud style. They flew their biker flag proudly while adding more production polish on 2019's I Can't Imagine, and delivered a set of beefy, hard-rockin' country on 2022's Rolling Across America – Home Stretch. The Soul Circus Cowboys were formed in Tampa, Florida by songwriter and vocalist Billy McKnight. McKnight had pursued a solo career before forming the group, having released a solo album in 2007, and his name had been in the press for a tempestuous relationship with country singer Mindy McCready. In 2009, McKnight set out on a new creative path, and teamed up with guitarist Stephen Haendiges, bassist and backing vocalist Mike Bach, and drummer Jason Alfano. McKnight was friends with fellow Floridian Henry Paul, who had worked with Southern rock hitmakers the Outlaws and later with the popular country band BlackHawk. McKnight and Paul became songwriting partners, and when McKnight returned to Tampa after visiting Paul in his new home in Nashville, he and the band began putting their own spin on new material. The Soul Circus Cowboys developed a following the old-fashioned way -- by touring extensively through the South -- and in 2011 the group released its first album, Love Is Like a Rodeo. In 2014, they released a second LP, That's the Way We Roll, and added a second guitarist, Terry Cole. In 2015, the Soul Circus Cowboys cut a single, "Gotta Get Me One of Them," and the lineup shifted once again, with Terry Cole and Stephen Haendiges out of the group and Rick Morgan in as the band's guitar man. In 2016, their third full-length album, Tailgate Country, arrived. Three years later, they delivered their fourth album, I Can't Imagine, whose songs frequently paid tribute to the biker lifestyle, and the 2020 single "I Stand" enjoyed healthy streaming play thanks to its fierce statement of patriotism. An acoustic remake of the hit was included on 2022's Rolling Across America – Home Stretch, an EP that also featured seven fresh songs and plenty of hard rock guitar thunder. The 2023 single "Last Train Running" was the emotional anthem of a man who knows the end of his life at hand. By this time, the Soul Circus Cowboys had gone through more lineup changes, and joining Billy McKnight in the group were Ron Zebron on lead guitar, Dewey Buxton on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Dan Turner on bass, and Steven O'Reilly on drums.
