Sheebah

Ugandan singer, dancer, and actress Sheebah Karungi -- known professionally as Sheebah -- made a quick rise to success in 2014 on the basis of her hit single "Ice Cream" and accompanying EP of the same name. Her appealing mix of Afro-pop, reggae, R&B, and dancehall soon made her an international star, and she made her acting debut with a starring role in the 2016 film Queen of Katwe. The release of her first two albums along with a bevy of singles earned Sheebah Best Female Artist honors at the HiPipo Awards four years in a row. Her third album, Samali, appeared in 2020. Born and raised in the Kawempe district of Kampala, Sheebah took an early interest in dance and at the age of 15, joined a local dance group called Stingers. As her passion for music grew, she took up with the vocal group Obsessions in 2006, with whom she recorded a handful of songs. By 2010, she had begun a solo career and released her first official single, "Kunyenyenza." A later single, "Automatic," found some traction and she teamed up a second time with its author, Sizza Man, for 2014's "Ice Cream." The buoyant Afro-pop song proved to be Sheebah's breakthrough and effectively launched her career. Her Ice Cream EP earned her back-to-back HiPipo Awards and fueled demand for a full-length, Nkwatako, which she delivered in 2016. That same year, she branched out into acting, starring in the film Queen of Katwe while earning Best Female Artist at HiPipo and Zzina Awards. A second album, Karma, arrived in 2017 as Sheebah's popularity began to expand beyond Uganda, earning her the nickname Queen Sheeba. She continued releasing singles and landed another big hit with the 2019 Orezi collaboration "Sweet Sensation." After several years of anticipation, she delivered her third album, the lengthy 18-track Samali, in 2020.
