merci, mercy

Merci, Mercy is the project of Australian singer/songwriter Mercedes Thorne, an outlet for irresistible pop tunes that speak honestly about mental health struggles and the follies of youth. Exploding onto the scene in 2020 with the dreamy single “F***ed Myself Up,” she built a steady fan base off the strength of a growing assortment of catchy singles and EPs. As a teen, Thorne's life down under was uprooted when her family moved twice, to China and Thailand. Thorne felt unmoored when settling back into her homeland, a point reflected by her stage name Merci, Mercy (a result of indecision over how to spell her own nickname). She decided to channel that anxiety into music, self-releasing her first song, “Be,” in 2019. It almost immediately sparked interest from record labels and got her a deal with local major Liberation Records. Working with writer/producers Edwin White (Vance Joy) and Joel Quartermain (G Flip), colorful singles “F***ed Myself Up” and “Fall Apart” previewed her first EP No Thank You, No Thanks (2020), on which she sang candidly about alcohol abuse, toxic relationships, and self-doubt in the hope of keeping an open conversation around the taboo topics going. No Thank You, No Thanks earned high marks from critics. A year later, she re-emerged with another new EP, Is It Me, Or Is It You? primarily produced by American producer Chris Collins (Mod Fun, Gang of Youths). It featured the popular tunes “Winnie Crush” and “Into You.” Her third EP, Like an Orchid, arrived in 2023, reuniting her with Collins as well as boasting collaborations with Aussie producer Robby De Sá and the Wombats frontman Matthew “Murph” Murphy.
