Gory Blister

Italy's Gory Blister specialize in punitive, old-school technical death metal. Emerging in the early '90s, the band found regional success before infiltrating the European underground in 2002 with the release of their full-length debut, Art Bleeds. Subsequent efforts Graveyard of Angels (2009), The Fifth Fury (2014), and Reborn from Hatred (2023) saw the band add melodic and groove aspects to their sound while retaining much of the uncompromising death metal architecture of their inception. Comprised of Raffaele "Raff" Sangiorgio (guitar/bass/synths), Gianluca D'Andria (drums), and Paolo "John" Quaglia (vocals), the Milan-based group issued a pair of well-received demos in 1991. Inspired by the early works of extreme metal pioneers like Death, Possessed, and Necrophagia, Gory Blister honed their raw and relentless sound in dingy bars, backyards, and garages. They received national exposure in 1997 with the release of the mini-album Cognitive Synergy, and a 2001 appearance on a German compilation LP helped build a fan base outside of Italy. In 2022, the band issued their first long-player, Art Bleeds, which caught the attention of Dutch label Mascot Records. Released in 2006, the punishing Skymorphosis helped propel the group onto the European festival circuit, where they shared stages with Nevermore, Cynic, Sodom, Kataklysm, Virgin Steele, and Sebastian Bach. 2009's Graveyard of Angels, also released on Mascot, saw the group push their death metal sound in new directions, adding melodic solos and atmospheric interludes. They moved to Scarlet Records before the arrival of 2012's Earth-Sick, which featured guitarist and vocalist Karl Sanders from U.S. death metal band Nile on a pair of tracks. Gory Blister's style evolved again on 2014's Fifth Fury, which introduced elements of groove and doom to their tech-death attack. They continued in that vein on 2018's Mighty Music-issued 1991 Bloodstained and 2023's pummeling Reborn from Hatred, the latter of which was released by Eclipse Records.
