Goon Des Garcons
Building a varied portfolio in the rap underground in the 2010s, Arkansas' Goon Des Garcons employed his vocal and production talents to create left-field anthems that landed him a deal with Def Jam in 2020.
Though he first found success in the late 2010s and early 2020s, Goon Des Garcons was rapping almost a decade earlier; in 2013, the Arkansas native debuted with "Party On," a scratchy trap anthem in the vein of contemporaries like A$AP Rocky. After demonstrating his early versatility with the faster-paced "HUNDRED$" and cloud rap "THANKS4NOTHIN," Goon made his full-length debut with 2014's Meanwhile... EP, an 11-track set with a heavy influence from the contemporary South. His debut album, YOUNGDIRTYBASTARD, arrived later that year. Produced predominantly by close collaborator Mach Soul, the album saw the MC move in more expansive and experimental directions. After a relative absence in 2015, Goon returned in full-force with the explosive FORTHETIMEBEING EP, which replaced the laid-back sonics of his early career with bass-boosted distortion and vivid vocals. This new direction proved the template for a variety of singles, including "Parade," "REVENGE IN LA," and the Coffey-assisted "OUT THE FLAMES."
A third EP, Sore Loser, arrived in August 2017. Described as "a sonic landscape by GDG*," the project saw the musician flex his production talents with a minimal focus on vocals. Through the rest of the late 2010s, he continued to adapt to the trap-based zeitgeist -- which culminated in 2019's EP Cheers to the End of the World while releasing remastered demos from earlier stages of his career. 2020 proved a productive year for the Arkansas MC: alongside a flow of varied singles, Goon found his biggest placement to date alongside Cuco on "A24." After signing to Def Jam, he built hype in early 2021 for his sophomore LP, releasing singles "5AM," "JFC," and "RIDE" (featuring Fredo Bang, Reese LAFLARE, and Landstrip Chip, respectively.
