Gifted & Blessed

Gifted & Blessed, alternately GB, is Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker, an electronic musician who works in a wide variety of styles ranging from sample-based abstract hip-hop and progressive R&B to deep house and ambient techno favoring analog synthesis. A founding member of the Los Angeles beat scene, he is inspired by advancements in technology, cultural traditions, and spirituality. He refers to his work as "technoindigenous studies," and operates a label of the same name as an extension of his Gifted & Blessed imprint. Reyes-Whittaker utilizes an extensive collection of synthesizers and drum machines for his live performances and recordings, and performs DJ sets primarily consisting of his own unreleased or rare material. Along with an assortment of singles and EPs, Reyes-Whittaker has issued a handful of albums as either Gifted & Blessed or GB. His debut was Soundtrack for Sunrise (2004), a wild excursion into broken beat and acid jazz. Subsequent Gifted & Blessed albums include Within These Machines (2013), which focused on material created through his analog synthesizer studies, and Heard and Unheard (2023), a comparatively stern machine-soul excursion for Stones Throw. Reyes-Whittaker began producing music as GB during his late teens. His debut full-length, Soundtrack for Sunrise, featuring guest appearances by Steve Spacek and Airto Moreira, was released by American label Sound in Color in 2004. Following the album's release, Reyes-Whittaker spent several years studying analog synthesis and MIDI composition. He started his own Gifted & Blessed label near the end of the decade, and released a self-titled EP under the name Julian Abelar that showcased his abstract, spiritual approach to beatmaking. He then became highly prolific, issuing more rhythmic, danceable 12" EPs as well as experimental releases such as the digital album Healing Tones: Inverted Listening. He also began releasing music under several aliases and side projects, including the Abstract Eye (on Eglo Records), the Reflektor (on Kyle Hall's Wild Oats), and the Steoples (an avant-soul duo who appeared with an EP on Gifted & Blessed in 2012). In 2013, Reyes-Whittaker released his second proper full-length, Within These Machines. He then began another alias, Frankie Reyes -- a tribute to his Puerto Rican heritage -- starting with the 2016 Stones Throw release Boleros Valses y Más, using an Oberheim synthesizer to put his spin on Latin standards. The same year, under his primary alias, he contributed to Leaving Records' Modern New Age series with the Emotional Topography cassette. The Steoples continued Reyes-Whittaker's Stones Throw affiliation with Six Rocks and Wide Through the Eyes of No One, albums released respectively in 2017 and 2021, as did a second Frankie Reyes LP, Originalitos, issued between those two sets. Additional 12" releases as the Abstract Eye and the Reflektor were followed by the 2023 Gifted & Blessed full-length Heard and Unheard, a set of productions richer and darker than what preceded it.
