Billy Bond y La Pesada

Billy Bond y la Pesada del Rock and Roll was an Argentinian supergroup that served as one of the earliest pioneers of hard rock and heavy metal in Latin America. Throughout the course of its history, the group’s lineup included various names that would go on to achieve prominence within the Argentinian music scene, such as Luis Alberto Spinetta, Claudio Gabis, Pappo, and David Lebón, among others. Formed in 1970 by producer Jorge Álvarez (who founded the seminal record label Madioca) and lead singer Billy Bond (real name Giuliano Canterini), the group had a free-flowing approach to its roster, serving almost like a loosely defined musical collective. Billy Bond y la Pesada del Rock and Roll released their self-titled debut album in 1971, including tunes such as the frenetic psychedelic blues of album opener “Salgan al Sol”. A follow-up titled Volumen 2 was released the next year. As the group’s lineup stabilized, they also started performing as backing musicians on various albums, such as Sui Generis’s debut Vida. After a 1972 performance at a music festival resulted in a violent riot, the band lowered its profile, opting to stick to studio performances and releasing two more albums (1972’s Tontos (Operita) and 1973’s Volumen 4) before several of its key members relocated to Brazil, thus bringing the band to an end.
