Alfred Hui

A man of many talents, singer-songwriter Alfred Hui (born April 29th, 1988 in Shantou, Guangdong) can also count himself as an accomplished actor, semi-pro footballer, and fully-qualified dentist. Making strides in the music industry in 2009 as an entrant in TV talent show The Voice, the Hong Kong heartthrob reached eleventh place in the contest, subsequently landing a prestigious record deal with TVB Entertainment. His debut single, “My Departure Is Also a Kind of Love”, arrived the following year, reaching vast audiences as the theme to the drama series Gun Metal Grey. By 2011, he had written and recorded his first album, A Trilogy of Departure, which arrived in June via Stars Shine International and was soon certified gold. Two of its singles, “Departure” and “Ant”, were huge successes, respectively topping the Commercial Radio Hong Kong 903 chart and earning YAHOO!’s Search Popularity Award. After receiving an array of accolades for the LP, he returned in 2012 with his follow-up album Blue. Refining his brand of tender, heartfelt Cantopop, the project qualified for a gold plaque less than a month after its release, and also led him to receive an invitation to represent Hong Kong at the 2012 ABU Song Contest, in which he competed against prominent singers from various other Asian nations. His third LP, Grandit, landed in 2012, with its title track and “The Ode of Youth” both finding themselves atop national radio charts. Sharing new albums periodically, he has since continued to cement his reputation among Cantonese-speaking markets, scoring another major hit in the form of the Jinny Ng duet “Soulmates” and eventually signing to Warner in 2017. His self-titled major-label debut came in 2018, preceded by a landmark live show at Hong Kong Coliseum. He marked ten years of musicianship the following year with his tenth album Ten (拾), which scooped the Best Male Artist Album Award at the 43rd RTHK Top 10 Gold Songs Awards. His next project, a concept album about the nature of negativity called Negative, reared its head in 2020 and he won the first Gold Award for Male Singer accolade of his career at the 2020 Ultimate Song Chart Awards Presentation. After his contract with Warner ran its course, he announced his decision to delve deeper into the Taiwanese market. In October 2021, he launched his own label, Alfrecords, and inaugurated the imprint the following April via the release of his 13th album, 2021, with songs written by lyricist Albert Leung.
