Following the success of his 2019 album Pony, young British producer Rex Orange County, real name Alexander O’Connor, is back again with Who Cares?. Exploring solitude, losing your way and getting back on track again, this album is deceptively simple, with string orchestrations and strict grooves hiding behind straightforward musical elements. This lightly soulful pop is unwaveringly optimistic, and the bright voice of the singer and multi-instrumentalist really stands out. While the first track, Keep It Up, feigns naiveté, the album becomes more complex with each track. Tyler, the Creator (who O’Connor has worked with regularly) is featured on Open a Window. There’s a retro-style ballad named Making Time, and cheerful, airy rhythms on Worth It. Versatile and bright, Who Cares? is anything but pretentious, stripping things right back to basics and focussing solely on the melody and lyrics.
