El estremecimiento de placer está asegurado cuando vemos coincidir en la misma portada los nombres de Miles Davis y John Coltrane. Y con este sexto episodio de las Bootleg Series del trompetista, el estremecimiento pasa a convertirse –recurramos al eufemismo– en éxtasis. The Final Tour se centra en el último capítulo de la colaboración entre Miles y Coltrane. Estos cuatro CD recogen varios espléndidos conciertos grabados en el marco de su gira europea de 1960 –la última juntos–, antes de la muerte del saxofonista en julio de 1967. Podemos disfrutar así de sus dos actuaciones en la sala Olympia de París del 21 de marzo de 1960, de las dos del 22 de marzo en Estocolmo y de la del 24 de marzo en Copenhague, todas ellas disponibles por vez primera y extraídas de las cintas originales analógicas de un cuarto de pulgada.

Estos cinco conciertos tenían lugar solo un año después del lanzamiento de esa obra maestra que fue y sigue siendo Kind Of Blue, que había puesto patas arriba la escena jazzística del momento. La nuclear potencia creativa de ambos instrumentistas se demuestra tal que el quinteto parece a cada compás al borde de la implosión. Arropados por el pianista Wynton Kelly, el contrabajista Paul Chambers y el baterista Jimmy Cobb, tanto Miles como Trane se entregan a una serie de torrenciales improvisaciones que oscilan entre la fusión de sonoridades y la máxima contraposición. Pero de manera milagrosa todo fluye, nada encalla. ¡Qué portento! Y ahí reside la magia de estos cinco conciertos, que nos permiten gozar por separado de estos cinco gigantes pero también de su talento para rugir al unísono.

Y en cuanto al repertorio, esta caja supone una suerte de nirvana para los aficionados a Davis puesto que reúne sus mejores temas (no todos de composición propia), los que cimentaron su fama como inmenso trompetista: ’Round Midnight, Bye Bye Blackbird, On Green Dolphin Street, Walkin’, All Of You, Oleo, So What o All Blues… Por lo demás, The Final Tour concluye con una sorprendente entrevista ofrecida por Coltrane al DJ sueco Carl-Erik Lindgren. «¿Se siente llevado por la furia?», le pregunta. «No, responde Trane. Hace poco le explicaba a un amigo que la razón por la que emito tantos sonidos –lo que quizá me haga parecer furioso– es que intento expresar muchas cosas a la vez.
