Acerca del álbum

Un año después de la colaboración de Roger Vadim y John Lewis, del Modern Jazz Quartet (en el film No sun in Venice…), el joven Louis Malle, por entonces de 25 años, apelaría a otro coloso del jazz norteamericano para componer la banda sonora de una de sus películas. El trompetista voló a Europa por invitación del productor Marcel Romano para participar en una serie de conciertos. Y hay quien dice que fue Juliette Gréco quien presentó a Miles Davis al cineasta; otros, que se encontraron en el aeropuerto al llegar el músico a París. Sea como fuere, ambos se pusieron enseguida de acuerdo sobre el modo, cuanto menos original, de proceder a la hora de realizar el score de Ascensor para el cadalso: Davis y sus cuatro acompañantes improvisarían a partir de las imágenes que se les iban a proyectar en el estudio Poste Parisien durante una noche de diciembre. Una vez estrenado el film, el sello Fontana editó la banda sonora, y las sonoridades de Miles Davis se convirtieron en toda una referencia de la música cinematográfica, en una época en que los compositores solían ser de formación clásica.
Esta nueva edición nos ayuda a redescubrir toda la magia de los vaporosos y trágicos sones de Davis, de unas composiciones en realidad armónicamente muy sencillas. ¿Quién no recuerda el sorprendente crescendo cromático que introduce el tema principal (Générique)? Ciertamente, el músico traslada a sus temas la oscuridad y melancolía de la trama, pero al mismo tiempo se enfrasca en estupendas digresiones con tal de no coincidir sistemáticamente con el ritmo y el tono de las imágenes. Es el caso de una pieza como Dîner au motel, cuyo compás desenfrenado quiere reflejar más el miedo interior de los dos jóvenes protagonistas que la situación absurda y casi humorística que se nos muestra. La presente grabación se beneficia de un inédito, L’interrogatoire de Julien, estupenda composición de más de cinco minutos caracterizada por el diálogo, al mismo tiempo etéreo e inquietante, entre los címbalos (Kenny Clarke a la batería) y el piano (a cargo de René Urtreger). Tal sobriedad orquestal encaja muy bien con la simplicidad del decorado: Louis Malle optó por pintar un fondo uniforme más negro que el betún sobre el que evolucionan, a lo largo de la escena, los personajes interpretados por Maurice Ronet, Lino Ventura y Charles Denner. Pero el score de Davis es especialmente célebre por esos pasajes en los que Jeanne Moreau deambula por las calles de París en busca de su desaparecido amante (Florence sur les Champs-Elysées). Como en una canción, la quejumbrosa melodía acompaña íntimamente no solo las imágenes sino también la voz en off de la actriz, por entonces en la cima de su belleza y talento. A destacar que Louis Malle nunca olvidaría esa experiencia jazzística basada en la improvisación, encargando 30 años después a Stéphane Grapelli similares desempeños musicales en Milou en mayo. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
