El folklore americano es tradición, es patrimonio. Canciones antiguas que se transmiten de generación en generación, y que se mantienen vivas porque evolucionan. Músicos tocando con sus familias y pasándose la antorcha. Joachim Cooder no es una excepción a la regla. Es hijo de Ry Cooder, un inmenso músico cuya visión de la música folk es panorámica. Joachim ha tocado a menudo con su padre, y ahora es su padre quien lo acompaña en Over That Road I’m Bound, su primer álbum, dedicado a una relectura del repertorio del viejo músico Uncle Dave Macon. Este último, nacido en 1870 y muerto en 1952, es uno de los padres fundadores de la música folk y country, reconocible por su voz nasal aguda y su febril interpretación del banjo. Joachim Cooder le rinde homenaje en este álbum, pero realiza versiones modernizadas y muy personales. Aquí toca la mbira eléctrica, un extraño instrumento de inspiración africana que parece un cruce entre un xilófono y un piano de pulgar, y cuyo peculiar sonido marca el tono del álbum. Sus arreglos evocan tanto a África (escuchamos a Vieux Farka Touré, el hijo de Ali, en la guitarra) como a la música irlandesa o apalache. Las armonías vocales se deslizan como un viento cálido, y los instrumentos de cuerda (guitarra, violín, banjo...) tejen nuevos patrones en la trama de las canciones de Uncle Dave Macon.
