The title of K.Flay's—Kristine Flaherty's—fifth album is revealing. The 38-year-old singer/rapper was in "peak physical, mental shape" in the fall of 2022, having just returned from climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, when she woke up deaf in one ear. She was eventually diagnosed with sudden sensorineural hearing loss, a rare instantaneous condition, but, as she admits on "Are You Serious," the process of getting to that conclusion was maddening. "Woke up on a Saturday/ Deaf in my right ear ... All the doctors said the cause was just some mystery unknown/ Then they charged me $13,000 and the fuckers sent me home," K.Flay spits over big-foot bass. "Every crowded room feels like I'm drowning in the sound of incoherent conversations and my heart beats as it pounds … Are you serious?" she asks in disbelief, before the whole thing kicks into rock-rap rage. She turns this newfound vulnerability ("When you only have one ear, you go outside and it's crazy, it's like I'm in an insane asylum," she has said) on its head for "Raw Raw," a bit of Grand Guignol drama that blurs her experience with the scariness of new love: "Raw, raw/ Oh, I feel exposed/ Chainsaw/ Buzzing at my throat." Clocking in at under three minutes, it's her specialty: super short songs that get in and out and leave a mark. One of the best here, "Spaghetti," features Chicago rapper Kid Sister and barely makes it over 2:30. It's spacey, feel-good and self-deprecating, the glitchy vocals like AI becoming sentient and realizing human emotion is a lot of pain and boredom and confusion: "Life is what you make it/ Well that's the worst advice I ever got/ Life gives me spaghetti/ I tie it in knots." Vic Fuentes of Pierce The Veil guests on fuzzed-out "Irish Goodbye," all yelling and stomping, a smash-up of emo and industrial chug and churn. "Shy" is coy and flirtatious new wave cut up by serrated guitars. "Chaos Is Love" reminisces on an old romance against Postal Service-style beats. "Bar Soap" is light pop fizz and OK Go quirk. "In America" is satirical—damnation that plays like celebration: "So you want to be famous ... It's your birthright/ Take the stage/ No one does it quite like us in America!" K.Flay thrills, before tossing off, "Careful when you hear sirens/ Because the cops are also murderers." "Punisher" packs major swagger, like a boxer marching to the ring, even as she beats herself up ("Finish her/ Finish her … Nobody knows how to punish me like me"). She really does finish herself off on "Yes I'm Serious"—her Eminem moment, just under five minutes of self-loathing and hubris set to a cool beat. "White girl/ Dead alcoholic dad/ Scared to repeat/ The cycle of vodka ... Submit to chaos/ With the privilege of middle-class fear/ Plus internalized hate cause I'm queer/ Plus I really want to have that beer/ I guess the enemy's the face in the mirror." © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
