Being a little contrary and willfully perverse has long been part of Mudhoney's rare charm, and 2007's Live Mud is a fine example of the band's squirrelly attitude in action. After spending almost two decades building a fan base, how better to release your first live album than in a vinyl-only edition of just 500 copies? Live Mud was destined to be swapped online in MP3 form within days of its release (physical copies came and went fast and a free digital download was included with the LP), and the punch line of this particular joke is Live Mud just so happens to be a really good album. Recorded in December 2005 as the band was opening for Pearl Jam in Mexico City, Live Mud is a simple but effective document of Mudhoney in the 21st century, as they jump back and forth between material from their (then) recent albums Under a Billion Suns and Since We've Become Translucent and classic-era tunes like "Touch Me I'm Sick" and "Mudride." While this was probably not the point, Live Mud does confirm that Mudhoney's new songs are (with rare exception) just as good as the sorta-hits on display, and the band rocks out with commendable force as Mark Arm bellows with fury and wit, Steve Turner's messed-up guitar is still as messed up (and glorious) as ever, and Dan Peters and Guy Maddison still kick out those proverbial jams hard and heavy. Close up the set with a righteous cover of the Dicks' "Hate the Police" and you have an impressive document of a top-shelf band that still has its mojo and ain't afraid to use it. You'd think they'd want more than 500 people to hear it.
