Jacqueline Danno

Born in Le Havre on November 27, 1931, Jacqueline Danno grew up in Brittany in a family of sailors. She tried her luck in Paris, entering Mireille's Petit Conservatoire de la chanson, before performing at Bobino with François Deguelt in 1960. Noticed by the Pathé-Marconi label, she recorded for La Voix de son Maître a series of albums with realistic lyrics, including her cover of Jacques Brel's "Ne me quitte pas", "Tu t'en vas", "Pour un mot " by Bernard Dimey and Francis Lai, "Nicole et l'amour" or "L'Amour et la Guerre " by Dimey and Aznavour or "Au revoir " by Gilbert Bécaud, spread over a dozen super 45-tours (EPs), until 1964. After doubling Anouk Aimée's voice in Lola (Jacques Demy, 1961) and opening for Georges Brassens in 1962, Jacqueline Danno premiered "Non c'est rien " at the 1965 Rose d'or festival in Antibes, which was later covered by Barbra Streisand under the title "Free Again". She toured throughout Europe and as far afield as Japan and the United States. Also an actress, she appeared in the films Ce soir ou jamais (Michel Deville, 1961), Tout le monde il est beau, tout le monde il est gentil (1972) and Moi y'en a vouloir des sous (1973) by Jean Yanne. A committed singer, she took part in the collection of songs Pour en finir avec le travail (1974) initiated by producer Jacques Le Glou. Alongside her singing and film work, she appeared in plays by Marcel Aymé, Garcia Lorca, Victor Hugo, Dostoyevsky, Gorky and L'Opéra de quat' sous by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. She returned to song with the albums Danno (1983) and Il Était Une Fois... Édith Piaf (1988), starred in the musical Cabaret directed by Jérôme Savary in 1995, and performed at the Théâtre du Trianon, Paris, in 1996. In 1999, she took part in Jacques Offenbach's opéra bouffe La Périchole, at the Palais de Chaillot (Paris). Jacqueline Danno appeared in a number of TV series, including Les Cinq dernières minutes (1975), Les Enquêtes du commissaire Maigret (1985, 1992) and Navarro (1998). In 2006, she played in the play Ben-Hur directed by Robert Hossein at the Stade de France. She died on November 28, 2021, the day after her 90th birthday.
