Passend zur No-Doubt-Reunion erklärte Gwen Stefani 2011 ihre Solokarriere noch als beendet. Mit dem im März 2016 veröffentlichten This Is What the Truth Feels Like veröffentlichte sie dann aber, immerhin zehn Jahre nach dem Vorgänger The Sweet Escape, doch wieder ein Soloalbum. Das steht vor allem im Zeichen der Trennung von ihrem Ehemann, dem Bush-Frontmann Gavin Rossdale: Nicht nur in Songtiteln wie "Used to Love You" oder "Me Without You" klingt die Scheidung durch. Dennoch klingt die Platte nicht nach Trauerarbeit: Auf vielen Songs klingt Stefani befreit und die Stimmung ist ausgelassen, ob auf der Retro-Disco-Single "Make Me Like You" oder Club-Tracks wie "Red Flag". Auch sonst regieren die Pop-Sounds - nur textlich ist Stefani überraschend offen, was ihre Gefühlswelt angeht, und spricht Enttäuschungen und Schmerz an. Die reguläre Edition hat 13 Songs, die Deluxe-Version fügt vier Bonustracks hinzu.
