Jeder zünftige Krieg braucht ein Gesicht, gegen das er geführt werden kann. Ist dieses erst mal gefunden, ist es einfach, all seinen Hass darauf zu konzentrieren. Auf den einzig wahren Antichristen können sich die Prog-Rocker der Siebziger, die wahren Musikfreunde, die vom Radio geschundenen Kinder der Achtziger, die zerrupften Grunger und die einzig trven Genesis-Fans bis heute schnell einigen: Phil Collins.

Selbst 2016 kann die pure Erwähnung seines Namens noch zu einer explosiven Diskussion führen. Dabei sollte einem jedoch eines immer bewusst sein: Es gibt keinen Witz über Collins, den er nicht selber schon besser erzählt hat.

Nun erscheinen seine acht Soloalben als Deluxe Editions. Das Debüt "Face Value" und das 1993 veröffentlichte "Both Sides" geben den Startschuss zur Sammlerbox "Take A Look At Me Now". Vielleicht wird es Zeit, nun doch einmal auf Lemmy Kilmisters Aussage aus dessen Interview mit der Süddeutschen Zeitung zu hören:

"Ich bin's leid. Collins ist ein großer Drummer. Er hat 'n paar große Songs geschrieben. Ich meine, wenn Mikkey (Motörhead-Schlagzeuger Mikkey Dee, die Red.) sich mal das Gehirn wegsaufen sollte kurz vor einem Auftritt, und angenommen, Phil Collins mit seinem lustigen Gesicht sitzt also zufällig in der Garderobe nebenan, okay? So. Und ich bitte ihn nun sehr, seeeehr höflich um Hilfe - wissen Sie was: Der spielt ein komplettes Set von Motörhead! Unfallfrei! So ist das. Ich ziehe meinen Hut."

Befreit man den Sänger und Schlagzeuger vom ewigen Peter Gabriel-Vergleich, seinem zeitlichen Umfeld und seiner sonderlichen Filmografie und betrachtet ihn nüchtern, bieten seine ersten vier Alben vor allem eins: gute bis sehr gute Pop-Musik.

Dabei gelang ihm sein bester Longplayer mit "Face Value" gleich zu Beginn seiner Solokarriere. Hier legte er den Grundstein für all das, was ihn später ausmachen sollte: Die Zusammenarbeit mit den Earth, Wind & Fire-Bläsern, den Phenix Horns. Die Balladen, die Collins in den Augen seiner Kritiker später das Genick brechen sollten. Der vorher mit Gabriel für dessen drittes selbstbetiteltes Werk ausgetüftelte Gated Reverb-Drumsound und natürlich "In The Air Tonight".

Wie viele Songs gibt es, die man alleine an ihrem Schlagzeugbreak erkennt? Wohl nicht viele. Keiner von ihnen hat sich jedoch so in die Popkultur gefressen wie dieser. Selbst Mike Tyson durfte ihn in "Hangover" in die Luft trommeln. In der Liveversion auf der zweiten CD der Deluxe Edition wird die besondere Faszination dieses kurzen Stücks Musikgeschichte in der spürbaren Anspannung des Publikums und dessen darauf folgender Euphorie greifbar.

Um diesen brachialen Break bietet Collins einen düsteren Thriller, der wie so vieles auf "Face Value" aus seiner Trauer um die gescheiterte Ehe mit seiner Frau Andrea entstand. Eine makabere Mixtur aus minimalistischer Pein und donnernder Wut. "Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand." Durch den unerbittlich voranschleichenden Drumsound des Roland CR-78 wabern Vocoderstimmen, bis letztlich Collins knochentrockenes Schlagzeug einsetzt. "Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it!"

In "Thunder And Lightning" und "I Missed Again", das mit einem Saxofonsolo des Jazzers Ronnie Scott aufwartet, etabliert Collins mit seinen von Bläsern geprägten Sound, der später zu "You Can't Hurry Love", "Easy Lover" (mit Philip Bailey) und "Two Hearts" führte. Dabei beruht all dies eher auf einem Zufall. Bei den Aufnahmen zu "Duke" spielten Genesis das Tape zu "Behind The Lines" auf doppelter Geschwindigkeit ab. Onkel Phil gefiel, was er hörte und für sein Debüt entschlackte er den Prog-Rock-Song zu einem lichtdurchfluteten Pop-R'n'B-Track.

Auf den ersten Blick erscheint die hoffnungsspendende Ballade "It Must Be Love" simpel und anschmiegsam, verfügt aber über einen komplexen Rhythmus. Zu "If Leaving Me Is Easy" scheint heute nur noch erwähnenswert, dass sich Eric Clapton irgendwo in dieser Ödnis versteckt. Mit dem Beatles-Cover "Tomorrow Never Knows", das der Londoner als Erinnerung an den kurz zuvor ermordeten John Lennon aufnahm, vergaloppiert sich Collins gehörig.

Die beiden Instrumentals "Droned" und "Hand In Hand" zeigen "Face Value" ein weiteres Mal von einer komplett andere Seite. Das erste erinnert mit seinem Fusion-Sound, den afrikanischen Klängen und dem Einsatz von Shankars furiosen Violinenspiels und Voicedrumings an die Freiheit von Weather Report. Das Gegenstück "Hand In Hand" lädt mit seinem Kinderchor und Bläsern zu einer überschwänglichen Reise ein, aber erst der zehnminütige Livemitschnitt auf der Bonus-CD wird zu einem farbenfrohen Spektakel. Sollte hier irgendjemand auch nur ansatzweise an Collins Fähigkeiten am Schlagzeug gezweifelt haben, dem dürfte kurz darauf im Brand X-Stück "...And So To F" die Kinnlade auf Kniehöhe herunter klappen.

Auch wenn man um die meisten Collins-Alben ab den Neunzigern, vor allem um den "Tarzan"-Soundtrack, einen Umweg machen sollte: Mit "Face Value" und "Both Sides" gelingt ein erfolgreicher Einstieg in die Aufbereitung des Backkatalogs. Die Idee und Umsetzung des Coverdesings ist fabelhaft. Das Bonusmaterial wurde liebevoll zusammengestellt.

Der perfekte Moment, um seinen Hass zu überwinden und sich noch einmal ohne Vorurteile mit dem Werk des Künstlers zu beschäftigen. Mehr Liebe für Phil Collins!

Albumbeschreibung

Jeder zünftige Krieg braucht ein Gesicht, gegen das er geführt werden kann. Ist dieses erst mal gefunden, ist es einfach, all seinen Hass darauf zu konzentrieren. Auf den einzig wahren Antichristen können sich die Prog-Rocker der Siebziger, die wahren Musikfreunde, die vom Radio geschundenen Kinder der Achtziger, die zerrupften Grunger und die einzig trven Genesis-Fans bis heute schnell einigen: Phil Collins.

Selbst 2016 kann die pure Erwähnung seines Namens noch zu einer explosiven Diskussion führen. Dabei sollte einem jedoch eines immer bewusst sein: Es gibt keinen Witz über Collins, den er nicht selber schon besser erzählt hat.

Nun erscheinen seine acht Soloalben als Deluxe Editions. Das Debüt "Face Value" und das 1993 veröffentlichte "Both Sides" geben den Startschuss zur Sammlerbox "Take A Look At Me Now". Vielleicht wird es Zeit, nun doch einmal auf Lemmy Kilmisters Aussage aus dessen Interview mit der Süddeutschen Zeitung zu hören:

"Ich bin's leid. Collins ist ein großer Drummer. Er hat 'n paar große Songs geschrieben. Ich meine, wenn Mikkey (Motörhead-Schlagzeuger Mikkey Dee, die Red.) sich mal das Gehirn wegsaufen sollte kurz vor einem Auftritt, und angenommen, Phil Collins mit seinem lustigen Gesicht sitzt also zufällig in der Garderobe nebenan, okay? So. Und ich bitte ihn nun sehr, seeeehr höflich um Hilfe - wissen Sie was: Der spielt ein komplettes Set von Motörhead! Unfallfrei! So ist das. Ich ziehe meinen Hut."

Befreit man den Sänger und Schlagzeuger vom ewigen Peter Gabriel-Vergleich, seinem zeitlichen Umfeld und seiner sonderlichen Filmografie und betrachtet ihn nüchtern, bieten seine ersten vier Alben vor allem eins: gute bis sehr gute Pop-Musik.

Dabei gelang ihm sein bester Longplayer mit "Face Value" gleich zu Beginn seiner Solokarriere. Hier legte er den Grundstein für all das, was ihn später ausmachen sollte: Die Zusammenarbeit mit den Earth, Wind & Fire-Bläsern, den Phenix Horns. Die Balladen, die Collins in den Augen seiner Kritiker später das Genick brechen sollten. Der vorher mit Gabriel für dessen drittes selbstbetiteltes Werk ausgetüftelte Gated Reverb-Drumsound und natürlich "In The Air Tonight".

Wie viele Songs gibt es, die man alleine an ihrem Schlagzeugbreak erkennt? Wohl nicht viele. Keiner von ihnen hat sich jedoch so in die Popkultur gefressen wie dieser. Selbst Mike Tyson durfte ihn in "Hangover" in die Luft trommeln. In der Liveversion auf der zweiten CD der Deluxe Edition wird die besondere Faszination dieses kurzen Stücks Musikgeschichte in der spürbaren Anspannung des Publikums und dessen darauf folgender Euphorie greifbar.

Um diesen brachialen Break bietet Collins einen düsteren Thriller, der wie so vieles auf "Face Value" aus seiner Trauer um die gescheiterte Ehe mit seiner Frau Andrea entstand. Eine makabere Mixtur aus minimalistischer Pein und donnernder Wut. "Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand." Durch den unerbittlich voranschleichenden Drumsound des Roland CR-78 wabern Vocoderstimmen, bis letztlich Collins knochentrockenes Schlagzeug einsetzt. "Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it!"

In "Thunder And Lightning" und "I Missed Again", das mit einem Saxofonsolo des Jazzers Ronnie Scott aufwartet, etabliert Collins mit seinen von Bläsern geprägten Sound, der später zu "You Can't Hurry Love", "Easy Lover" (mit Philip Bailey) und "Two Hearts" führte. Dabei beruht all dies eher auf einem Zufall. Bei den Aufnahmen zu "Duke" spielten Genesis das Tape zu "Behind The Lines" auf doppelter Geschwindigkeit ab. Onkel Phil gefiel, was er hörte und für sein Debüt entschlackte er den Prog-Rock-Song zu einem lichtdurchfluteten Pop-R'n'B-Track.

Auf den ersten Blick erscheint die hoffnungsspendende Ballade "It Must Be Love" simpel und anschmiegsam, verfügt aber über einen komplexen Rhythmus. Zu "If Leaving Me Is Easy" scheint heute nur noch erwähnenswert, dass sich Eric Clapton irgendwo in dieser Ödnis versteckt. Mit dem Beatles-Cover "Tomorrow Never Knows", das der Londoner als Erinnerung an den kurz zuvor ermordeten John Lennon aufnahm, vergaloppiert sich Collins gehörig.

Die beiden Instrumentals "Droned" und "Hand In Hand" zeigen "Face Value" ein weiteres Mal von einer komplett andere Seite. Das erste erinnert mit seinem Fusion-Sound, den afrikanischen Klängen und dem Einsatz von Shankars furiosen Violinenspiels und Voicedrumings an die Freiheit von Weather Report. Das Gegenstück "Hand In Hand" lädt mit seinem Kinderchor und Bläsern zu einer überschwänglichen Reise ein, aber erst der zehnminütige Livemitschnitt auf der Bonus-CD wird zu einem farbenfrohen Spektakel. Sollte hier irgendjemand auch nur ansatzweise an Collins Fähigkeiten am Schlagzeug gezweifelt haben, dem dürfte kurz darauf im Brand X-Stück "...And So To F" die Kinnlade auf Kniehöhe herunter klappen.

Auch wenn man um die meisten Collins-Alben ab den Neunzigern, vor allem um den "Tarzan"-Soundtrack, einen Umweg machen sollte: Mit "Face Value" und "Both Sides" gelingt ein erfolgreicher Einstieg in die Aufbereitung des Backkatalogs. Die Idee und Umsetzung des Coverdesings ist fabelhaft. Das Bonusmaterial wurde liebevoll zusammengestellt.

Der perfekte Moment, um seinen Hass zu überwinden und sich noch einmal ohne Vorurteile mit dem Werk des Künstlers zu beschäftigen. Mehr Liebe für Phil Collins!
