This is the fifth in the series of pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet's recordings of Mozart piano concertos, but it is not designated as such. This may be because it stands somewhat apart from the others, including operatic overtures in between the four piano concertos on the program. These are almost three- (or two-) movement symphonies, and they hang together nicely with the piano concertos. All the music is from the early part of Mozart's career, and Bavouzet catches not only the exuberance of these concertos but the way the first three work out aspects of the vast expansion of the form that would coalesce in the Piano Concerto No. 9 in E flat major, K. 271, Mozart's first true landmark in the form. Bavouzet has applied heavy ornamentation in some of the earlier recordings in the series, but here it's dialed back a bit, and everything seems spontaneous yet restrained. These qualities are enhanced by the easy familiarity between the pianist and the Manchester Camerata under Gábor Takács-Nagy, who have performed many of these works in concert. A highly enjoyable recording of early Mozart.
