This release made classical charts in the spring of 2023, and it is no surprise; the music is engagingly performed and mostly unfamiliar. Except for the four-movement piano concerto of Errollyn Wallen, the music has never been recorded before. All the pieces are by women, but they differ considerably from one another, and it would be hard to discern a distinctively female streak. The concerto by the Wallen draws on popular idioms but departs just as it seems to begin to verge into crossover territory; sample the second movement, "Languid Blues," which has new ideas in how to expand Gershwin's union of blues and concert music. All of the music is for piano and orchestra, but only Wallen's work is designated a piano concerto, and indeed, the relationship between the piano and orchestra is different in each case. Perhaps the strongest work is the opening Dialogue for piano and orchestra of Elizabeth Maconchy (1941), whose title is apt; the music is a kind of conversation between piano and orchestra, not a competition. This is an admirably compact work, tonal but not Romantic, and very tightly constructed. Elisabeth Lutyens is represented by a pair of pieces. Eos, Op. 101, represents the Greek goddess of the dawn, although the eroticism of this figure may be hard to hear in Lutyens' serialist work for small orchestra containing a piano; her Music for Piano and Orchestra is hard serialism in the Viennese mode. The BBC Concert Orchestra under John Andrews is a group accustomed to lighter fare, but the group achieves the needed precision here, and they work well with the two pianists, Martin Jones in the Maconchy and Lutyens works and Rebeca Omordia in the Wallen. Fresh sounds, all around.
