After having recorded the complete piano works of Georges Enesco for Naxos (on the Grand Piano Records label), gifted Spanish-American pianist Josu de Solaun is back with a double album devoted to six piano sonatas by Joseph Haydn. This new recording is primarily a passion project, however, it’s also intended as a tribute to one of his favourite composers. There are many sides to Josu de Solaun and his recitals can be unpredictable. He’s no stranger to completely improvised concerts, delivering performances guided only by his impulses and inspirations in that moment. He’s also a published poet and composer.
It’s the poetic aspect of Haydn's music that guides his fingers and thinking throughout this recital, which is neither didactic nor historically informed. There’s an evocative beauty in Josu de Solaun’s sound, and his perfect phrasing (Adagio from Sonata n° 38) and almost romantic expression (Moderato from Sonata n° 33) only serve to highlight the incredible ingenuity of the Austrian composer. Unfortunately, Haydn is all too often overshadowed by Mozart, his best friend, and Beethoven, his pupil. However, there’s no doubt that this composer deserves his place among the greats, both for inventing the forms that would go on to define the entire classical era and for the audacious creativity that radiates from all his works, often shattering the frameworks he himself had created. © François Hudry/Qobuz
