We’re a long way away from the time when Aloe Blacc was spearheading soul’s revival on the label Stones Throw. Since shooting to fame with his hit I Need A Dollar, the American singer moved to Interscope in 2013 and slid – slowly but surely – towards more modern, honeyed sounds. Like a train travelling at full speed and unable to change course, this fifth solo album cements his new sound. No more references to the past. No more horn sections. No more vintage tinges. Everything here is squeaky clean – maybe a bit too clean for some tastes. Aloe Blacc has decided to continue singing about universal themes: love (I Do), family (Family), hope (Hold On Tight). It’s simple. Everything revolves around these three axes – the three pillars of American life. It’s good feelings galore, paired with a super emotional voice, all calibrated to bring tears to your eyes (whether it does or not is another question…).
