Bill Withers est l'un des artistes exceptionnels de la musique soul, qui a apporté sa propre touche au genre avec son art de raconter des histoires. Avec ses chansons primées aux Grammy "Ain't No Sunshine" (1971), "Lean on Me" (1972), "Just the Two of Us" (1980, sur l'album Grover Washington Jr.) ou "Grandma's Hands" (1971), "Use Me" (1972) et "Lovely Day" (1977), il a fait son chemin dans le cœur de tous les amateurs de musique.
Il a commencé à écrire des chansons dans la vingtaine, après avoir longtemps servi au Moyen-Orient (la chanson "I can't write left-handed" a élevé ses paroles au niveau politique), et a obtenu un grand succès avec son premier album. Après avoir été inclus dans la bande originale de "Jackie Brown" de Tarantino avec "Who Is He (And What Is He to You)" (avec les Crusaders avec lesquels il a collaboré), sa carrière a pris un autre tournant. Bill Withers est pour beaucoup une source d'inspiration : le hip hop pour les samples (DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Tupac, Eminem, BLACKstreet...), le R&B pour les reprises (Luther Vandross, Busta Rhymes et Diana Ross) et le rock pour les nouvelles idées (Mick Jagger, Lenny Kravitz...). Sa voix de velours caractéristique et inimitable continuera à résonner dans le cœur des générations à venir...
