Depuis qu'elle a écrit certains des succès les plus emblématiques des années 60, dont "The Loco-Motion", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" et "Up On the Roof", avec son mari de l'époque Gerry Goffin, jusqu'à sa ré-invention en tant qu'auteure-compositrice-interprète féministe au début des années 70, Carole King a tissé la trame de la musique pop américaine. On dit que Lennon et McCartney ont voulu s'inspirer de Goffin et King. On pourrait affirmer qu'elle semblait toujours être au bon endroit au bon moment, qu'il s'agisse du Brill Building de New York ou de la scène du canyon de Los Angeles dans les années 70 ; mais il est plus juste de dire que Carole King a contribué à rendre ces lieux magiques. Son album phare Tapestry, qui fête ses 50 ans en 2021, a scellé son statut royal d'artiste solo, avec plus de 25 millions d'exemplaires vendus dans le monde. Elle n'a jamais hésité non plus à "reprendre" ses propres chansons rendues célèbres par d'autres en les imprégnant de son propre esprit de liberté.
