Rev. Isaac Douglas

b. Philadelphia, USA. A passionate gospel singer with his own ministry, Douglas was regularly compared to the Rev. James Cleveland at the inception of his career. He had grown up listening to many of the great gospel singers and sees himself as a ‘guardian’ of that tradition. He moved to New York from his native Philadelphia in the mid-60s and formed his first, all-male singing gospel group. Named the Isaac Douglas Singers, their first release for United Artists Records was Lord Have Mercy. After this he helped to found the New York Community Choir. Among that group’s notable commissions was the invitation to sing backing vocals for Nikki Giovanni’s popular album, Truth Is On The Way. Among the group’s regular concert venues were New York’s Museum of Modern Art, while mainstream television appearances on shows such as Soul ensued. Continuing to be influenced by Cleveland, in the early 70s Douglas relocated to Los Angeles to found his own ministry. At the same time he entered a new recording contract with Nashboro/Creed Records. His own band recorded with that label, as did the New York Community Choir. A move to Nashville followed, where he continued to collaborate with choirs including the Johnson Ensemble, with whom he recorded ‘The Harvest Is Plentiful’.
